Burlesque, erotica and circus at The Box

By Andy Dubois

Just to be clear, The Box is not for everyone.  It’s a once-in-a lifetime kind of experience that combines erotica, loud music, and burlesque at an insane price.

The show begins at 1 AM. Every 45 minutes you’re treated to another performance.  As the night goes on, the acts get more and more weird.  The evening is designed to shock so don’t be surprised if you start to see people call it quits and head for the door.

If you are conservative this is not the place for you.

The atmosphere is more nightclub than underground shock theater so the depravity you witness can feel almost glamourous.  The show we saw wasn’t as crazy as some of the stories we had heard about the place but it was still completely over the top and definitely not the type of thing you’ll find anywhere else.  We were extremely lucky to know a friend of the owner and it really made the night remarkably easy for a place with the reputation of keeping a long line and making entry without a connection difficult or expensive. The alcohol was never in short supply and our seats gave us a fantastic view of the action.  If you’re someone who loves the sensory overload of a packed club, you’ll feel right at home at The Box.

We recommend :: You NEED a reservation. Try to go during the week when it’s less crowded and don’t show up before midnight

Try :: Stay for the “speakeasy” after-hours…. if you still have energy !

Address :: 189 Chrystie St, New York, NY
